Since the dedication of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., in 1981, hundreds of Vietnam memorials have been established around the United States. Veterans often build them, but to what purpose? What does this say about the continuing battle over the narrative of the Vietnam War? This lecture explores these and other questions regarding the "Memorial Mania" phenomenon and war memory. Professor Bill Allison (’95, PhD) of Georgia Southern University will present the 2020 Gary R. Hess Lecture in History, an annual distinguished lecture initiated by Dr. Hess's former students to honor his 45 years of teaching, scholarship, and service to BGSU.
